Sago Palm/ Cycas palm

Sago palms also known as Cycas palm  have become very popular landscape plants in modern, classy Indian gardens. But most people do not realize that these are not palms at all, despite the name and appearance. Sago palm is actually a cycad. Cycads are very primitive in their origins. There’s fossil evidence that they’ve evolved very little for many millions of years so we’d describe them as ‘primitive’. Therefore as a group, cycads are often referred to as “living fossils”.

Sago palms are very slow growing plants. Their growth patterns are unpredictable. These can quite happily sit around for several years producing no new growth at all and then suddenly, one summer, transform themselves in 2 or 3 weeks with 30 lovely new fronds. They’re mostly unsusceptible to pests and diseases.
