Coconut Palm

The Coconut Plant is a member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae) and the only species of the genus Cocos. All Coconut Palms are highly salt tolerant and make nice street trees if planted when they are tall enough. Foliage consists of old pinnately compound, green-yellow coloured leaves which are spirally arranged.

Be aware that falling fruit can damage vehicles or hit pedestrians. To avoid this they can be removed from the tree. Coconut Palms grow best in full sun on any well drained soils. They respond well to being fertilized.

One can propagation coconut palm by burying (half) the coconut in soil. But beware its germination can take many months.

The coconut palm’s fruits form a regular part of the diets of many people in the tropics and subtropics. They are known mainly for their large quantity of nutritious water content and tender jelly-like flesh inside.
